Nikko Toshogu is one of the most lavishly decorated shinto shrine in Japan, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Unlike most Japanese temples and shrines, the buildings of Toshogu are extremely gaudy and ornate, with multicolored carvings and plenty of gold leaf, which show heavy Chinese influence. Although it was built in 1617, this shrine’s unchanging beauty still attracts many visitors from the world. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. What capture visitors’ eyes are the famous sculptures of three wise monkeys at the shrine’s stable. It is a trio of small wooden sculptures which represent “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.” This tour includes Iroha-zaka and Kegon Falls which are also famous sightseeing spots in Nikko. Both Iroha-zaka and Kegon Falls are popular travel destinations for the beauty of crimson foliage. However, these places have a beautiful landscape of the four seasons; each season brings these places different faces. This tour will provide you the glimpse of Japanese history and beautiful and authentic Japanese sceneries.
